Her Story

Heather Moraitis served as the District 1 Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner from 2018 to 2022, delivering landmark projects that transformed the city. Before and alongside her time in office, she taught Advanced Placement Government and Politics at Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

As a City Commissioner, her signature projects included, bringing David Beckham’s Inter Miami soccer team to district 1 in the city of Fort Lauderdale, building a new home football stadium for Fort Lauderdale High School and Stranahan High School, renovating the Swimming Hall of Fame, bringing the FL Panthers to War Memorial, opening two new YMCAs in Fort Lauderdale, bringing the Fort Pickleball facility to Snyder Park, and the Bayview Drive Streetscape Improvements.A University of Florida graduate with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education, Heather holds her Florida Educator's Certificate in Social Sciences. She has been recognized with the Governor's Points of Light Award and the Florida Department of Education Commissioner's Business Recognition Award — twice — for her work in education.

Heather served on the Broward League of Cities Board of Directors throughout her entire term and was nominated to the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors, where she served as Vice Chair of the Federal Action Strike Committee (FAST), lobbying state and federal government on issues vital to Fort Lauderdale.

Heather and her husband George — a retired U.S. Navy submarine officer — returned to Fort Lauderdale after his service and have been active members of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church for over twenty years. She successfully managed his campaigns for Florida State Representative (2010–2018) before running her own campaigns for City Commission. They have two grown daughters and one furry friend.
